SM1P02-Ex
ATEX Zone 1 Certified Headset
Sensear SM1P02-Ex
The new SM1P02 elevates Sensear’s portfolio of smart headsets by providing some new features and benefits to improve safety, reliability, and efficiency. This new industrial headset offers a robust design adhering to higher noise reduction standards of up to 27dB NRR depending on the headset wearing style. It’s upgraded Bluetooth® module allows for the streaming of audio to the headset, a valuable feature for users that listen to music during long work shifts in high-noise environments.
The headset uses Sensear’s SENS® technology to enhance speech and suppress noise while the noise-cancelling boom mic filters out background noises so that only speech is transmitted through the microphone. The new cable connection at the ear cup allows you to use it as a wired headset along with Bluetooth and Short Range or unplug the cable and use it as a completely wireless headset via Bluetooth and Short Range.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the SM1P02-Ex suitable for hazardous areas?
Yes.
The SM1P02-Ex is certified for use in hazardous environments requiring ATEX and IECEx approval, including areas where explosive gases, vapours, or combustible dusts may be present. Certification should always be checked against site-specific zoning requirements.
Is the SM1P02-Ex a hearing protector or a communication headset?
It is both.
The SM1P02-Ex provides certified hearing protection while also enabling communication via:
-
Two-way radio
-
Bluetooth®
-
Short-range headset-to-headset communication
-
Face-to-face conversation
Environmental sound is managed digitally rather than being completely blocked.
What is SENS® Technology?
SENS® (Speech Enhancement, Noise Suppression) Technology uses multiple microphones and digital signal processing to:
-
Suppress harmful background noise to safe levels
-
Enhance speech frequencies
-
Maintain 360° situational awareness
This allows users to hear alarms, approaching vehicles, and co-workers while still protecting their hearing.
Does the SM1P02-Ex use active noise cancellation?
No.
The SM1P02-Ex does not use consumer-style active noise cancellation. Instead, it uses noise suppression and speech enhancement, which reduces dangerous noise while allowing important sounds to remain audible and intelligible.
How loud can audio get inside the headset?
The headset includes an electronic volume limiter that limits in-ear audio exposure to 82 dB(A) when the headset is powered on. This applies to all audio sources, including radio, Bluetooth®, short-range, and face-to-face communication.
How is the SM1P02-Ex powered?
The SM1P02-Ex has a built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery.
It does not rely on a two-way radio for power and can operate independently of any external device.
How long does the battery last?
Typical battery performance is:
-
Up to 24 hours when used with a wired radio connection
-
Around 18 hours when Bluetooth® and/or short-range communication is active
Charge time is approximately 4 hours.
Can the SM1P02-Ex be used with two-way radios?
Yes.
The SM1P02-Ex can be connected to industry-leading two-way radios using a radio-specific cable with an inline push-to-talk (PTT). The correct cable must match the radio make and model.
Can the SM1P02-Ex be used wirelessly?
Yes.
The SM1P02-Ex supports wireless communication via:
-
Bluetooth®
-
Short-range headset-to-headset communication
This allows users to communicate without being physically connected to a radio when required.
What is short-range headset-to-headset communication?
The SM1P02-Ex includes built-in short-range FM communication, allowing headsets to communicate directly with each other without using radios.
Key points:
-
Range of up to approximately 50 metres
-
Supports up to 8 programmable channels
-
Half-duplex communication
-
Ideal for close-proximity team coordination
It is not intended to replace site-wide radio systems.
Can short-range communication be used at the same time as radios?
Yes.
The SM1P02-Ex is capable of handling multiple audio sources at the same time, including:
-
Two-way radio
-
Short-range headset-to-headset communication
-
Face-to-face conversation
Actual behaviour depends on configuration and operating mode.
Does the SM1P02-Ex support Bluetooth®?
Yes.
Bluetooth® can be used for:
-
Phone calls
-
Audio streaming
-
Certain compatible Bluetooth® radios
Bluetooth® audio streaming is only available in Quiet Mode. Bluetooth® audio is muted in SENS® mode.
What is Quiet Mode?
Quiet Mode disables the environmental microphones and allows only communication audio (such as radio or Bluetooth®) to pass through the headset.
This mode is typically used in extremely noisy environments where situational awareness is not required or is managed through other controls.
Can users talk face-to-face while wearing the headset?
Yes.
In SENS® mode, users can communicate face-to-face without removing the headset. Speech is enhanced while background noise is suppressed, allowing conversation in high-noise environments (up to approximately 95 dB(A)).
